These friends joined us last night to embark on the crazy, wild, vulnerable, beautiful amazing performance art adventure that is The Very Super Special Feelings Show. They shared their most tender, intimate, hilarious, delightful, dark, embarrassing, heart breaking and desirous childhood writings. This is one reason we at Sinner Saint are so in love with this show. It is a place where our community can gather to laugh, share stories, to feel, to empathize, to know the truer truths of our colleagues, and to witness the courage it takes to speak and to listen. The Very Super Special Feelings Show is an example of a world we want humanity to inherit - a world where people gather and honor their stories.
Sinner Saint also wants to thank everyone who attended and celebrated with us. The Very Super Special Feelings Show is the kickoff to a summer-long campaign, fundraising for Inheritance: Maiden, Mother, Crone, produced in association with Theatre Off Jackson. Talking about feelings, we feel obsessed with this show. Here's why and what we're fundraising for...
In summer 2013, Sinner Saint learned that our venue, the Noc Noc, would be close. Our rein as having the longest continually running weekly burlesque show in Seattle, came to a bitter sweet close. We sat on the lawn at Seattle Center, wondering what we would do next. How would rebirth ourselves? We reflected on what we had accomplished over the past seven years and what we inheritance we wanted to leave. We wanted to continue educating, entertaining and inspiring our audiences...especially women. Sitting there in the cool grass, we circled on everything we were noticing in the media about women. Hot debates on health care, equal pay, rape culture, street harassment, body image, etc. We knew a social revolution was happening, and we didn't just want to support it, we wanted to ignite it. Sinner Saint wanted to establish its own legacy and offer people a different inheritance about what it means to be a woman.
It was time to prototype a world that elevated, celebrated and integrated the feminine. We piloted three cabaret shows at the Can-Can: Maiden, Mother and Crone, each exploring the questions, challenges, joys, fears and universal experiences of these archetypal stages of life. Our audience joined us for the first time in a talk-back following the show to share their reflections and responses to our acts. They were such a success and so inspiring to us that we knew our next step would be to curate a full length theatrical production. And so we are.
