It was early 2014. We huddled around a living room sipping tea, on a dark and drizzly Seattle winter day. The piloted Maiden, Mother and Crone shows were a huge success. We wanted more. We wanted to curate a single, compound production. One of the first questions we asked ourselves that day was "WHY ARE WE PUTTING ON THIS SHOW?" Here is what we initially wrote...
To explore the maiden, mother and crone archetypes in ways that allow us to celebrate what is healthy and beautiful, to challenge or reject that which is toxic, and to connect to the wholeness of women’s lived experiences.
To make an impact on the mind/body
To create momentum
To make the fractured depictions of women’s lives whole
To pass on an inheritance
To start a dialogue
To draw parallels between past, present and future
To create a summoning
This show means the world to us. It is not just a show, it is art modeled after our lives. It represents the world we walk in, cry in, laugh in and create every day. Inheritance is the container for our individual and collective origin stories. It is a space to not only understand what our stories are, but how they have served us and defined our thoughts, feelings, values, passions and ways of being. It is also the space where we decide which origin stories we keep and which we transform.
I can't wait to learn what Inheritance means to us after we've had the honor to perform it. Until then, this is what it meant to us as we were first creating it...
This show represents the prototype and creation of a world where feminism is the (default, norm, standard, accustomed, conventional, endorsed, time-honored, universal, unopposed, preferred, customary, established, etc.) way of being. This show is our will and testament for the world describing what we hope it will inherit from us. It is a collection of modern folklore engaging the audiences and communities in the most important dialogue of the century.

We sat around, in our Sunday lounge-wear, at Jesse Belle-Jones' home. This is where we created our first vision board for the Inheritance production this October. Each of us journaled about what this show meant to us, why we wanted to put on this show, what was unique and special about it, and what this work of art represented to us. Here are two highlights from that conversation:
"This show is my...responsibility; choice; way of seeing and being seen; my way of creating the change I want to see in the world by being that change; sexual and spiritual revolution; space to rebel, feel power, celebrate, make art, have community dialogue; opportunity to be a role model for other women who will experience empowerment simply by watching me enact and create my own liberation."

Before our vision was a vision, it was a giant pile of words on a white board. We often start our creative process like this when we're developing shows. We free flow onto a white board in one giant stream of consciousness based on whatever is most alive for us at that moment. I think this is why our shows become so special and intimate - they are forged from our own stories, challenges, truths, grief, adventures, vulnerabilities, rage, love, lust and curiosities. We make what is meaningful for us in the moment.
Here it is - your backstage pass. The draft of words from our very first visioning brainstorm for Inheritance: Maiden, Mother, Crone. Take a look at the seeds that will become Inheritance.
