Something new we are adding to this show, and something we've never done before, is to set up a 'dueling stage.' This will be where two different acts are occurring on stage at the same time. It will be a new creative challenge to determine not only how the performers dance with one another, but how the acts also dance with one another.
Part of our regular process for every show, is to workshop and audition each performance piece for one another. This is part of our magic sauce and the emergence of creativity. Emergence is the "basis of development, learning and evolution." It is when new structures and behaviors occur spontaneously. The structures emerge from an organization's alliances, friendships, informal pathways of communication, skills and knowledge - its network of growing adaptive relationships (Capra, 1997, p.7-8). An example of the emergence of creativity is our process for act and show development.
Individual performers are responsible for developing acts based on an agreed upon theme. We workshop our acts, give and receive feedback, and audition the acts to approve them as stage-ready. The workshop process is exciting, ambiguous, stressful, chaotic, vulnerable and playful. It often embodies that moment when an idea is in the process of being born, but not yet full formed. It is the point where we try to bridge the crossover from inspiration to manifestation. Typically, a performer enters a workshop with a vague idea for a costume, movement, song, story arc, feeling, want, need or some form of curiosity. They share whatever it is they have and then the group coaches them in deepening, expanding, narrowing, exploding, flipping and shifting perspective on their ideas. Through rigorous feedback and play a final project begins to take form. Each time the dancer performs the piece, the act continues to absorb qualities of the environment it is rehearsed in. What is great about this process, is that each individual act, while developed by one artist, carries the spirit, qualities and essence from the artistic whole that is the troupe. Emergence is an expression of an organization's collective creativity (Capra, 1997, p.7-8). We are head over feet in love with each of our acts for the Inheritance: Maiden, Mother, Crone show, and the show as a whole. We know you will be too.
